You may be weighing your options right now, trying to decide if you would like to get that degree that will enhance your career. You may be wondering if you can do a program. If you are thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning, here is some advice that may help you out.

Studying online is a great option for many of us. We don't have to spend time commuting to campus or sitting in class. You have a more flexible schedule, working whenever you want to work. You can usually find a specific program that offers just what you need online.

One of the best things about online programs for most of us, is that you can keep working while you take classes. You don't have to worry about squeezing your classes in around your work schedule. For many people, this is the selling point of online programs. They are well suited to working people. Often, the tuition is lower than that of a traditional university, so that helps make it easier, too.

Studying online has its other advantages for certain people. If you are physically handicapped, it is easier to take classes on the web. If you need to stay home and take care of family, this might be a good option for you. Finally, if you are simply shy and don't want to go out and face your other classmates, this offers a good alternative.

There are some drawbacks, however. Some professors are used to the classroom setting and have trouble making the adjustment to doing courses online. They may have technical problems with getting the materials online, or it may be hard for them to communicate effectively with their students.

Likewise, taking online classes requires you, the student, to be well equipped with the necessary software. This could be a problem, especially if you have patchy internet access. You may need to have a DSL or other high speed internet connection. Communication may be difficult, and it may be hard for you to access your professors when you need to ask them something. If the day-to-day contact with professors and classmates is an important part of education for you, then this is not a good option.

There are problems with taking classes on the web, but it is gaining popularity, especially among professionals who can't stop and go to school.
